Villea didn’t understand what the word “delight” meant, so she asked her father. He answered, “My plants are a delight to me. You, Palangga, are a delight to your mother and me.” Her father smiled at her as he touched the strands of curly hair that had partly covered Villea’s eye, and tucked these behind her ear. His long arms then reached out to hug her tightly. And Villea understood.

The Philippine Board on Books for Young People (PBBY) awards the 2022 PBBY-Salanga Grand Prize to Dulce Maria V. Deriada for her story, “A Girl Named Villea,” which talks about loss and grief during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Deriada teaches literature and creative writing courses at the Division of Humanities of the University of the Philippines Visayas. In 2016, her collection of creative nonfiction Faces, Phases, Places was published by Kasingkasing Press. Her short story, “Candelaria,” won third prize in the 2018 Carlos Palanca Memorial Awards for Literature in the Short Story in Hiligaynon category. This is Deriada’s first PBBY-Salanga Prize.

PBBY also recognized six Honorable Mention winners: “Look at Your Hands” by Joanna P. Intia; Toby the Turtle by Antonio Adrian M. Habana V; Gab: Ang Munting Gabay by Christian Lester C. Bautista; Ang Batang May Sandaang Pangalan by Bryan L. Cabatingan; The Treasure Within by Jerwin Eileen GC. Tarnate; and, The Visit by Khristian Ross P. Pimentel.

The winners will be awarded at the 39th National Children’s Book Day celebration on July 19, 2022.
