Freelance Visual Artist wins
2010 PBBY-Alcala Prize

The Philippine Board on Books for Young People awards the 2010 PBBY-Alcala Prize to Aldy Aguirre for his artworks based on the 2010 PBBY-Salanga winning poetry collection by Raymond Falgui. Aguirre, a freelance illustrator and visual artist, is a member of Ang Ilustrador ng Kabataan (Ang Ink) and has always had a passion for creating illustrations for children. His current works for different organizations include creating illustrations that promote children’s rights and welfare.

His entry, rendered in watercolor, pencil, and ink, represents a simple yet unrestricted visual imagery of the winning collection. Aguirre’s illustrations draw inspiration from memories of his childhood. “The poems bring back forgotten moments when we were children. It also invites us, children and adult alike, to have a more creative and productive means of telling experiences and venting out frustrations,” Aguirre said. He hopes that his work will, not only convey this message, but also express a story of its own and impart a valuable lesson to everyone viewing it.

Aguirre shall receive Php20,000, a gold medal, as well as have the opportunity to be published. Prizes will be awarded on July 20, 2010 at the Karapatan Hall of Museo Pambata.

This year’s honorable mention winners are Rommel Joson, Van Zeus Allen Bascon, and Sergio Bumatay III.

UP College of Arts and Letters Teacher Wins
2010 PBBY-Salanga Prize for Children’s Poetry

The Philippine Board on Books for Young People awards the 2010 PBBY-Salanga Prize to Raymond G. Falgui, a fictionist, poet, and English teacher at the University of the Philippines – College of Arts and Letters. His entry, a collection of poems, explores a range of topics: from a child’s response to his parent’s bickering to a child’s rapture over falling rain. “Children can move from pensive to unhappy to jubilation to fearful to apathetic just like that, and I like to think that's what's reflected in the varied themes of the poems.” The poems, Falgui says, “are intended to be read and enjoyed separately.” Readers are invited to open various doors of experiences, drawn from the poet’s own memories of his childhood.

This year’s PBBY Salanga Prize is the first time that the contest focused on children’s poetry.

Falgui shall receive P 20,000.00, a gold medal, as well have the opportunity to be published. Falgui’s work has also been recognized in the Tulaan sa Tren 2 Poetry Writing Contest, where he won the First Prize in the English category.

For inquiries about the contest, contact the PBBY Secretariat at telephone number 372-3548 loc. 105 or e-mail pbby@adarna.com.ph.
